Saddle Pads

A well-fitting and comfortable saddle that's been adjusted to fit your horse or pony's back is essential. Whether you've chosen a leather or a synthetic saddle, it's one of the more expensive equine purchases you'll make, so it pays to keep it in top-notch condition. A numnah is shaped like the saddle, whereas a saddle pad is larger and usually rectangular, so that it's much more visible when you're riding. Whichever type you choose they all come in a variety of materials, thicknesses and colours, so you can ring the changes every time you ride.

Your numnah or saddle pad stops the saddle from rubbing uncomfortably against your horse's back when you're riding, much as we wear socks between our feet and our shoes. It also absorbs sweat and helps to keep your saddle clean, as well as looking smart.

Riser pads can help to improve the fit of a saddle by lifting it slightly either at the front or the back. They're ideal for horses who need more building up across the topline or to compensate for any temporary muscle wastage. They shouldn't be used to compensate for a poorly-fitting saddle though, so it's best to consult your saddle fitter if you're not sure.

Gel riser pads provide an extra layer of comfort cushioning between your horse's back and the saddle. They can be placed directly on the horse's back, where the gel construction makes them double up as non-stick saddle pads for extra security. Or they can be used in addition to your usual numnah or saddle pad.
