Bandages for Horses & Ponies from all the Best Brands
Horse bandages are one of the most traditional and effective ways to protect your horse’s legs from the elements as well as knocks or strain that may cause internal and external injuries while providing support and comfort. There are different types of bandages for horses and, although most models can be used for multiple purposes, it’s important to understand the differences between them. When choosing a set of bandages for your horse, it’s important to consider factors like the weather and intended use, among others, to achieve the best and most comfortable results for your equestrian companion.
Horse Bandages Explained
Horse legs are delicate, especially below the knee in the front legs and the hock in the hind legs. These zones contain tendons, soft tissue, nerve terminals, articulations, and bones. But what makes it so fragile and special is the absence of muscles that also serve as shields and shock absorbers in other body structures.
Another ultra-sensitive part is the fetlock joint, which has the suspensory ligament pack in its back. The fetlocks are like our ankles, support most of the horse’s weight, and are recognisable because of their spherical shape and the long hairs that grow on their back.
Using bandages over your horse’s legs is an excellent way to prevent injuries when training, working, competing, riding outside the arena, and even at the stables. They are perfect for keeping horses healthy and sound because they add an extra layer of protection, support, and contention. Horse bandages reinforce horses’ body structure, helping them absorb shocks and contain their joints during closed turns or while moving along uneven surfaces. Bandages for horses protect the most vulnerable parts of their legs from branches and other potentially harmful elements, including their own hooves!
Fleece bandages for horses also help your equestrian companion’s legs rest after training or competing by promoting blood flow, which prevents swelling and adds extra support and pressure to keep them comfortable.
Horse bandages are practical for covering wounds and injuries and keeping topical medicines in place. Besides, bandages protect horses’ legs during transport and are effective for keeping horses’ legs hot in cold weather and moisture-free and dry in summer.
Types of Bandages and Their Uses
There are three main types of bandages for horses: stable, polo, and exercise/training bandages. They have different uses; however, some models become more versatile and can be used as horse travel bandages when combined with proper bandage pads.
- Stable Bandages: These horse bandages are less elastic and thicker than polo and exercise/training bandages. As the name suggests, they are made to protect horses’ legs in the stable or as travel bandages for horses. They are often made of warm, breathable fabrics, and some models are made of materials that repel shavings for easy cleaning. Stable bandages can be safely worn for long periods and can be used on top of stable bandage pads for extra
- Polo Bandages: Polo horse bandages are more elastic than stable bands, and they are usually made of fleece or polar and sometimes contain Lycra or other stretchy materials. They are named after the Polo sport and were adopted by other equestrian disciplines. They are soft, and their elasticity allows freedom of movement while providing excellent cushioning and protection to the horse’s legs during exercise and training. Although polo bandages are more breathable than stable bandages, it’s advised to use them over working bandage pads to enhance air circulation, prevent overheating, and keep the horse’s legs dry during exercise, especially in summer or mild weather. Because polo bandages are tighter than stable bandages, they shouldn’t be left on for more than a couple of hours.
- Exercise/Training Bandages: These bandages for horses are usually made of thinner fabric than polo and stable bandages for enhanced breathability. They are the most elastic type of bandage available, translating into more stability and protection of the tendons and soft tissues during heavy exercise. Because of their elasticity, they must be fitted with extreme care and by a trained hand to avoid applying uneven and excessive pressure that may result in discomfort or injuries.
Horse Tail Bandages
Tail bandages for horses protect horses’ tails during transportation. They are made of soft and flexible materials like fleece or neoprene, offering cushioning and protection for the tail, preventing potential injuries. Horse tail bandages are also great for keeping the tails free from dust and dirt after a bath.
We often recommend the Acavallo® Gel Tail Bandage for horses, which offers an excellent combination of a tail bandage and a tail guard. It is made of a super strong gel that absorbs any pressure caused by the horse sitting or rubbing its tail while traveling, and the sticky gel and strong Velcro strap keep it secure in place, protecting the horse’s tail hair.

Notice: It’s crucial to avoid applying excess and/or uneven pressure when bandaging a horse’s legs. You should be able to insert two fingers comfortably between the horse bandages and your horse’s legs.
