Co-ordinating our horse’s gear with our own is so satisfying that there’s a matchy-matchy revolution happening right now! In recent years, here at Discount Equestrian, we have found that an increasing number of riders and owners fall in love with a particular colour and set to work kitting out both themselves and their horses in it – we admit, most of us have done this too. Therefore, we felt it was about time we created a guide to help you decide which colours would suit your horse best. We’ve also compiled some helpful collections, to make it even easier for you and your horse to enjoy the co-ordinated satisfaction of the matchy-matchy revolution for yourselves.

* Grey horses look stunning in virtually any colour. Though, in our opinion, we think colours that work best on greys are turquoise, royal blue, and burgundy.
* Dark bay or black horses suit bright colours best, such as white, orange, and various shades of green.
* Bright bay horses wear all shades of blue, green, and purple exceptionally well.
* Chestnut horses are beautiful in pastel colours as well as yellow tones, and – controversial we know – various shades of red.
* Piebald and skewbald horses seem to sparkle in any shade of red, any shade orange, and all forms of blue ranging from pale or powder blue to navy.
* Dun horses dazzle in any shade of pink, all types of purple, and pastel colours.
* Palomino horses are radiant in any striking colours, though we feel they look fantastic in purple tones.
* Roan horses can get away with wearing many different colours, though for strawberry roan we think bright colours such as turquoise work best – whilst for bay roan, we believe slightly muted tones are most suitable, such as champagne.
* Appaloosas rock absolutely any colour combination, though our favourite colours for spotty steeds are vibrant and eye-catching, such as bright reds, glowing greens, bold purples – basically any colour that ‘pops’.
